Table of Contents for June 2007 [Vol. 9 No. 6]
When I volunteered to format the Grapevine during Fr. Hugh’s sabbatical, I never imagined this might also mean writing an article. But, since something was needed for the front page, here goes –
This year’s Lenten study program focused on Benedictine principles. The readings on the “currencies” used in communal living were of particular interest to me. The author explains that the “currency of exchange” used by a community directly impacts its ability to thrive. Currency of exchange describes how people treat one another, both by words and actions. What are the traits we exhibit and value when we interact with one another? The subsequent group discussion caused me to ponder how I would describe the currency of exchange used by the members of the St. Patrick community.
I have heard many people describe how welcomed they felt on their first visit to St. Patrick’s. At this year’s neighborhood meetings, participants commented how nice it is that people make a special effort to introduce them to other members of the congregation. Potluck suppers always have a great turn out. This would indicate that one of our currencies of exchange is friendliness.
Results from neighborhood meetings were discussed by the vestry and directly influenced the goals set for 2007. In addition, vestry members are present after each service to solicit comments from the congregation. This would indicate that our currency of exchange also values openness and respect for differences of opinion.
When I first came to St. Patrick’s, I wondered why a relatively small congregation had three services. As I attended each one, I came to realize that they were necessary to satisfy the spiritual needs of the congregation. This would indicate that our currency of exchange places a greater emphasis on each member’s personal growth than simply numeric growth.
Again and again, St. Patrick parishioners offer their time, talents and treasure to those who are suffering in our parish, our community and the world. This would indicate our currency is also one of compassion.
What do you believe the currency of exchange is for our parish? How can we ensure through our actions and words that our currency continues to make St. Patrick’s a thriving faith community?
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Banks
