If you want your lights to work, you have to pay your PGE bill. If you don't, they switch off the power. There's no one to tell you, "Don't forget to pay your bill." Cause and effect will be your motivation.
This is a parable for our spiritual life. In our church no one will remind you to pray; it's between you and God. If you cease praying then the light of Christ may go out.
I have learned that if I stop exercising for any length of time, my aerobic base deteriorates. Likewise, if I stop taking my medicine, the pre-existing condition returns. As a wise old friend told me in the changing room at the gym, "you have to keep on top of it." All of this is true in our spiritual practice.
In the season of Epiphany, it is the light of Christ that we seek. The meaning of the word, epiphany, is that the light is manifest to ordinary people like you and me. So "Arise, shine; for your light has come" (Isaiah 60:1).
The season begins with the Wise Men who follow the light of the star until it leads them to the stable where they find Mary and Joseph and the holy child to whom they offer their rare gifts. The season continues with the marriage at Cana where Jesus displays the extraordinary ability to turn the water of the commonplace into the vintage wine of abundant life. It concludes with the transfiguration where the disciples on the mountain saw "the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ" (2Cor 4:6). As disciples we make the same journey.
It is not an easy journey. "A cold coming we had of it… A hard time we had of it," say the wise men in the poem by T.S. Eliot. In her new book, The Case for God, Karen Armstrong says that it takes practice. Religion is not about believing a number of statements about God (doctrines), but is something we do (p. xii). She says, "you cannot learn to dance, paint, or cook by perusing texts or recipes… Some things can be learned only by constant dedicated practice. But if you persevere, you achieve something that seemed initially impossible." We shall discuss The Case for God at an Adult Ed session on January 10.
There are a number of different kinds of religious practice: corporate worship with the people of God and receiving the sacraments, meditation and quiet time, intercession and praying for others, outreach and ministry to others, pastoral care and attentiveness to other people. None of these come easily; they all require effort. But the incentive is that we see the light of Christ. So whatever we do, at the beginning of this new year let us seek to become enlightened!

ST ANDREW'S EPISCOPAL MISSION in Monte Rio has seen a 44% increase in requests for their Food Program. Each Tuesday they have given out over 120 bags of food and supplied dinners to 150 twice a month. They receive their food from the Santa Rosa Redwood Food Bank. Because of a lack of space at the Mission, this winter they are asking for blankets, sleeping bags, scarves, hats and gloves/mittens rather than clothes. They greatly appreciate all the help St. Patrick's has given them.

BISHOP'S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2009
The mornings are dark, pitch black until after most of us have begun our days. The hints of dawn in the eastern sky, those streaks of rose and pink that promise more and brighter light, bring hope even in the dark mid-winter. Where do you look for that kind of hope borne on slim rays of light?
Jesus is already abroad, even in the darkness. The hungry one fed, the street people who have their feet cared for, the humble and honored guest at your dinner table -- each one offers a glimpse of that dawn, if you look closely enough.
What we have waited long for, ages and eons for, has been born among us. He comes among us quietly, almost stealthily, in an obscure barn, long ago. This child holds all our hope for light. This tiny frame seems too frail to bear our yearning. Yet the nations come streaming to this light even before he is weaned. The divine has come to dwell in our midst, and God's eternal promise of peace, restoration, and home is made flesh.
Where and how will you seek out this light of the world? In what other frail frames will light expunge darkness? The light grows with our own eager searching, light reaching out to light, divine reflection yearning for its source. May the light of Christ light your way in the darkness, may his light spread through nations besieged by war and hunger, may we continue to search out his light in the dark places of our own hearts.
The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori
Presiding Bishop

ANNUAL MEETING
This important meeting takes place on
Sunday, January 31, 2010
Packets of reports are available on Sundays before the meeting. Please pick one up and read it in advance.
Chuck Chapman, the treasurer, will present the accounts for 2009 and proposed budget for 2010. There will be reports and discussion about programs for both 2009 and the New Year.
Three new vestry members will be elected. The outgoing vestry members are Bill Ward and Hutch Gibb. Continuing members are Wes Cazel, Sarah Phillips, Fran Crane, Cynthia Pennington, Barbara Fry and Ingo Rencken. The following have been nominated for election to the vestry:
CHARLIE BUFF has been a member of St Patrick's for about 25 years more or less. He usually attends the 9:00 am service. He celebrated his golden wedding anniversary with Judy in December 2009. They have three children: Jennifer, Matthew, and Carolann. He is a retired schoolteacher. What Charlie likes about St Patrick's is its rural setting, the welcoming congregation, and an opportunity to serve. He brings to the vestry a joyful willingness to serve. His vision for the parish is that we remain a church open to all and fully committed to the worship of God, the study of scripture and church traditions, and service to the community.
CHUCK WOOD and Sallie moved to Kenwood from San Rafael in June of 2008, and joined St. Patrick's that August. They both immediately appreciated the warmth and welcoming spirit of Father Hugh and the congregation. They mostly attend the 9:00 am service, enjoying the music and service around the altar.
Back at work after a short retirement, Chuck does business development for a commercial construction company based in Novato. In that role, marketing and promotion of the company's products and capabilities are central. This position allows for continued volunteering on Tuesday mornings, however: collecting food at Safeway for distribution at the Catholic Worker facility in Santa Rosa (recruited by Charlie Buff); and then, once a month, obtaining food at the Redwood Food Bank and taking it to the St. Andrew's Mission Church in Monte Rio (recruited by Father Hugh).
The Kenwood location is just close enough to the two children in San Francisco: son Brian and daughter Jessica. And, especially so for the three young grandchildren also there.
Chuck has never served on a vestry before, and he brings an open mind with no "here's how we did it before" baggage. He looks forward to learning from the other vestry members and being an active team member. Goals include continuing St. Patrick's strong contribution to an internal sense of community within our parish walls, as well as a strong presence in the external community through outreach.
DON ALLISON served on the vestry 2001-2003. He and Micke arrived at St Patrick's in 1996 from St Stephen's Sebastopol (where Don was on the vestry a couple of times). They have lived in their current house in Bennett Valley for 37 years. They have 2 sons and 2 grandchildren. Don continues to work as an insurance broker. He grew up in the Episcopal Church and was the youngest vestry member at St Paul's San Rafael at age 21. He brings experience and enthusiasm to the vestry. He would like to see the Sunday school grow and for the parish to be strong financially. He and Micke usually attend the 8:00 a.m. service where he is a Lay Eucharistic minister, though sometimes they attend at 9:00 a.m.
VESTRY START-UP MEETING
Immediately following the January 31 Annual Meeting, there is a brief meeting of the vestry (new and continuing members) in the Education Center to plan dates and times.
